Frederick Benjamin is an advanced skincare line that truly understands the unique needs of multicultural men with melanated skin.
The phrase that all men are created equal couldn’t be truer, but when it comes to hair and skin types, there’s certainly a difference.
Although most men’s grooming products work well for every man, there are some guys that need a little more attention.
Skin Types
There are four basic types of skin and it’s important that guys understand what type they have. Once you have a solid understanding of your skin type, you’ll know exactly what products will work best for you.
Normal Skin – The lucky guys that really don’t have any skin issues will fall into this skin type. They are free to use pretty much any product they come across. However, I still recommend looking for products that use natural ingredients.
Oily Skin – A large majority of black men have an oily skin type. This is where there’s an overproduction of sebum (the skin’s natural oil) that can make your face look shiny and greasy. If you don’t treat the overproduction of oil, your pores can become clogged, causing blackheads, pimples, and other types of acne.
Dry Skin – If you’re a guy with dry skin, then it’s super important to exfoliate and moisturize daily. Guys that neglect doing this will eventually get painful cracks in the skin on top of looking old.
Sensitive Skin – Sensitive skin is probably the worst skin type to have. It’s hard to find a product that works well without irritating your skin. It’s also possible to have a combination of sensitive skin and dry or oily skin. So a bit more attention needs to go into your skincare routine when you have this skin type.
One of the big things to look out for in the products you use is harsh chemicals and parabens. Make sure that whatever products you choose it has natural ingredients. This plays an important role in having healthy skin.
Hydrating Your Skin
There are two things that guys need to do daily. Wash your face and moisturize. It doesn’t matter how light or dark you are, you need to take care of your skin.
You might not be able to see it, but dirt, oil, and dead skin cells build up on your face daily, so even if you think you look clean, you’re not. Washing your face will help to reduce the size of your pores and prevent blackheads and pimples from forming.
Regardless of your skin type, it’s important that you moisturize your face daily. After your face is clean you’ll want to apply a moisturizer that is designed for your face. Don’t use hand lotion, because that’s for your hands. You could use your lady’s face moisturizer, but there are manlier options that smell great and are actually designed for a man’s skin.
Moisturizing also helps to control the overproduction of oil for guys with oily skin, while helping to keep your face hydrated if you have normal or dry skin.
Preventing Skin Irritations When Shaving
If you have sensitive skin, shaving is never fun. Especially if you are among those who suffer from ingrown hairs and razor bumps. Not only are these skin irritations painful, but they’re pretty nasty to look at.
There are several things you can do to help prevent razor bumps. And if you do the following, you shouldn’t have an issue with them anymore.
- Wash your face (and your head if you’re bald) with a good exfoliating cleanser.
- Make sure that you moisturize daily; the more you do it the more hydrated your skin will be.
- Before your shave use Frederick Benjamin’s Easy Primer Pre-Shave. This stuff is loaded with avocado oil, olive oil, and grapeseed oil to help prep your skin for shaving. The primer will coat your hairs making them softer while preventing skin irritation when the blade touches your skin.
- When you’re ready to shave, ditch the big brand shave creams and go with Frederick Benjamin’s Hydro-Glaze. This isn’t a traditional shave cream, but rather a foam-free gel that enhances your shaving experience. Your blade will glide over your skin to give you a closer, more comfortable, and pain-free shave.
The gel uses an aloe extract that helps to immediately heal and moisturize your skin, while the witch hazel helps soothe any irritation. - Now if you are ready to keep those ingrown hairs from forming and to help clear up any bumps you currently have, you’ll need to apply Frederick Benjamin’s Bump Clear post-shave and razor bump treatment.
After the first couple of weeks of daily use, you should start noticing clearer skin and soon those bumps will be gone!
Beard Care
If you are among the many guys who have embraced their manliness with a beard, you need to know how to take care of it. Like shaving, there is a process for taking care of your beard to keep it soft and manageable. Before you go on that date, think about the evening kiss and if your beard is going to scrub her face clean like a Brillo pad, or is it going to be so soft that she’s going to want more?
Don’t use shampoo or soap on your beard. Use a good beard wash like Frederick Benjamin’s Beard Wash. Not only will this clean your man mane, but this bead wash has nettle oil that promotes hair growth, hemp seed oil to add hydration, and clove oil to stimulate circulation. This is everything you need to promote a healthy beard that the ladies will love.
Before you leave your bathroom, you’ll need to add some hydration to your beard to help keep those hairs soft all day. The Frederick Benjamin Beard Crème is a lightweight crème, that has nettle, clove, and hemp seed oil to moisturize even the toughest beards.
Speaking from experience, I like to add a few drops of pre-shave oil to my beard and work it through the hair. This adds another level of hydration and helps keep it always looking on point.
Hair Care
A lot of guys still don’t know that washing their hair every day is a bad thing. Unless you have a dirty job, there’s no reason to wash your hair every time you get in the shower. Doing so actually strips your hair of the natural oils that help promote a healthy scalp. At the most, you should only wash your hair once every two to three days. However, it’s a good idea to condition your hair every day.
Fredrick Benjamin offers a shampoo and conditioner that are truly invigorating (it’s even printed on the bottle). There is no better word to describe how amazing this shampoo and conditioner make your head feel. Plus, they are sulfate, alcohol, and paraben-free, so you don’t need to worry about putting any harsh chemicals on your head.
After your shower, you can use Fredrick Benjamin’s Sleek Water pomade for a medium hold or the Crown Control Forming Crème for guys with long hair who want to add a little more style. I use the pomade and I love it. A little goes a long way too, and it doesn’t make my hair feel stiff, so my lady can still run her fingers through it.
Wrapping Up
It’s time to commit to taking better care of your skin and scalp. You’ve got to give Frederick Benjamin a try. You’ll soon be convinced that there’s a better way to manage your grooming routine.
Frederick Benjamin isn’t new to the men’s grooming space. They’re a black-owned business that has been helping men look and feel great since 2010. Although their products focus on solving the problems that men of color experience, they are truly great for all hair and skin types.
